KANZASHI FLOWER VISORS
Kanzashi flower making is both very old and very new. Its history started as a tradition of beautiful hair ornaments going back to thousands of years in Japan. Today there has emerged a new generation of Kanzashi enthusiasts. Kanzashi is a cousin of "origami" (or paper folding), however, Kanzashi uses fabric, which is cut and folded to make each petal of a flower.
Kanzashi first came into widespread use in Japan during the Edo Period, around 1600. Japanese women began to curl, sculpt, and adorn their hair, using decorative combs and pins made from metal or lacquered wood. In modern Japan, Kanzashi flowers are worn primarily by geisha. Each month of the year is represented by a specific design of Kanzashi.
I use the Kanzashi folding technique to make the flowers I use on my Visors today. Each and every Kanzashi flower on a KJ Visor is handmade to compliment the color of the individual visor.
